Should a threshold be in Hardwood can Softwood be used?

Putting a partition up in dining room. However, I have been told that thresholds are done in Hardwood. Is this true or can Softwood be used?

Hardwood are harder wearing although there are some soft hardwood!

There are also some hard softwoods. If you could use pitch pine or something similar you may be ok but personally I would use hardwood. I made the ones in our house from ash and these have lasted well.
