Should I use ptfe tape to connect to a female 1/2 inch connection?

Some come with a rubber seal that sits in the bottom but that can be troublesome when it comes to getting the right outlet direction. Yes, PTFE tape would normally be used, either that or cord/thread.
Personally I use gas tape as that's what I always carry, 6 to 7 turns.
