Shower mixer nuts - which way to take off?

I am trying to remove the nuts on this shower mixer valve. I am trying to turn them anti clockwise to remove, is this correct? I'm asking as they won't move at all.

Also, if anti clockwise is correct, is there anything I can do to help remove them? Thanks!
