Siemens SN640 dishwasher problem

My dishwasher has developed a fault in which the water inlet valve does not seem to operate. No water is getting into the dishwasher BUT the heater element still operates. Also the release catch on the dishwasher tablet compartment cover is permanently open.

Is this just a faulty valve, or a fault in some circuitry?

I was surprised that there is no flow sensor to make sure the heater can't operate without water - there was a stench of buring calcified deposits, and this must be a fire hazard.

Please can you also point me to a parts diagram/catalogue and supplier if you can recommend replacement parts
