Is it ok to put some silicone grease on the spindle of basin taps to try make them operate better, or can it contaminate the water?

I used Copaslip the other day when I couldn't find a tin of "plumbers grease" that I had . Surprisingly the plumbers grease doesn't seem to be recommended for this use .I was going to ask what should be used . This is on cheapo B&Q taps that jam up after a few months
