Silicone on rough brick...

Hello,

I'm having new windows and doors fitted into a new extension next week. The bricks are Staffordshire multi rustics. I've asked the window fitting company to use brown silicone as my previous experience suggests that window fitters often leave a nasty silicone finish on these rough bricks that looks terrible in white.

I've told the guy in charge that I want care taking with the silicone and even suggested leaving it for me to do, but he prefers to finish the job so I don't blame him later if there is a leak. Fair enough. He said they can do a "gun finish" which avoids smudging on brick, but it looks better to do the usual finger finish according to him. I suggested using tape on bricks and frame to make it neater but he said they don't do that as it can make things worse when you remove the tape.

Any tips or ideas?

Personally if I'm sealing in brown even on a woodgrain window I always tape the frame for that straight line and I overlap onto the frame by at least 5mm to allow the silicone grip something when it tries to shrink in years to come. Taping the bricks isn't necessary if you don't apply too much silicone and drag most of it downwards, fingering it in gently, or you can use a stick

I overcame such a problem by using brown intumescent sealant twixt frame and very rough brickwork. It's somewhat on the thickish side, doesn't spread too far and is difficult to smudge. Also being an acrylic base, cleaning up is a doddle if you don't hang around. Once dry/cured its fully weatherproof and deals with expansion better than the average silicone(y)
