In the absence of the book of words it should be safe to try the boiler without the link - and see if it goes. Some Sime's certainly need volt-free contacts to be connected to the thermostat connections.
A case for a programmable thermostat perhaps as they have VF contacts. A radio one maybe to the loft if there are no wires in place!
