Sink overflow connection.

This was fitted around 40 years ago, but today the overflow decided to let go....

From what I could see, and interrupted in the middle of another urgent job. Overflow exits sink, then reverted to an oval connection[1}, which seemed a loose push fit. An oval fitting on the end of a convoluted flexible pipe then had an oval adaptor on the end, which slipped over the top of the item [1]. The end of the pipe, then connected to the trap...

Should there be something holding/sealing the two oval parts together please?
