Sink waste pipe.

Hi all.
Hope this isn't a daft question.
I'm fitting a 1 and a 1/2 bowl sink which has the main bowl furthest from the house waste outlet. Does the P-trap have to be connected to the main bowl or can I put it under the half bowl? Putting it under the half bowl will be a neater job, plus it will put the dishwasher waste connection nearer the dishwasher.
