i'm confused about the size of the live and neutral tails from the cut-off to the meter and from the meter to the consumer unit. What colour cables does code call for? Also, how would one tell the size of in-situ cables anywhere in a system?

16mm meter tails are common in existing installs and are ok on lower service fuses

but i would use 25mm for all new tails

modern meter tails have a grey outer and an inner colored red or black

older tails are only single insulated and are generally red and black or in some cases both black

tails on the incoming side of the meter are not your concern

sizeing in situ cables can be done in several ways
1: reading the print on the outer sheath
2: comparing with a known peice of cable
3: mesureing the outside dimensiona of a cable and looking it up
4: experiance

Some 60's/70's tails have outer insulation the same colour as inner ie red or black.

If you want to upgrade your supply fuse, the REC will replace the tails from the cutout to the meter.
