Hello,
I need to size an RSJ to span a space to take floor joist....can anyone advise where I can get reliable information please?
The project is in France and originally an oak framer was due to make a truss, complete with purlins and rafter etc., but he's let me down and I have to find another solution. I've asked a Glulam supplier, but have not had a response, so I'm looking now at a rolled steel joist. the room size (internal is 7100 x 5800).
Thank you for your time.

Sounds like you should be speaking to an engineer and your local council.

Thank you....that place of yours THW was pretty close to being a complete collapse.....you've done went to get it seemingly stable again :)

Are you spanning the 5.8m to then have 2 sets of joists 3.05m long?

What is the load? Any stud walls or just domestic dead and live load?

Do the floor joists need to act as collars to restrain the roof from spreading.

I think a drawing might be good. :)

Out of interest, where abouts in France?

Hi N7..... the RSJ was to span the longer distance of 7.1metres (the width) with 2 set's of joist of just under 3metres reaching out to the gables. There are no stud walls upstairs, just a domestic load (bedroom). However.....I'm considering going back to a wooden truss idea (making my own truss from Douglas, rather than the planned oak).... with the bottom chord sitting on a concrete pier!... I'm not going to "let in" (tenon) the joist, but will use joist hangers on the bottom chord and the wall plates on the gables as the joist will now be plasterboarded over rather than on show as planned.
I'm in the haute vienne (dept 87)

Hi THW, I'd orginally was going to have a queen post truss, made from oak (see darawing) but after the person who due to make it decided to double the price as they no longer effectively wanted the work.... So I started to look at other options. One was to use an RSJ to span the width (internal 7.1) sat on two piers, to take the floor joist and the load above (small bedroom)... I was then intending to use "nailweb" (5) x purlins to span the length (internal 5.8M) and to take the rafters. I'd also considered using nailweb joist across the width, but now I'm back around to considering a truss again.
The walls have been built (block) but the ring beam not installed and the truss was going to sit on oak piers (see drawaing).
I hope that's a little clearer, advice is always appreciated.

Hi THW, I was intending to use Oak and have the joist exposed below the ceiling, now I'm going to plasterboard them over, the desire for oak is less so.
I need to go and cost the timber. Mature Oaks are disappearing in this part of France at an alarming rate... In the 14 years I've lived here I've seen many local woods and forest disappear. I have many large 200 years old oak trees on my land that would surffice, but would prefer to leave them standing.
Thank you for your input.
Where are you in France?
