I am rendering the inside of a fireplace before installing a woodburner. My attempts so far have been less than perfect but I am running out of space for additional coats to improve the finish as I have already fitted plasterboard on the wall and the render is nearly up to the edge.

Does anyone know of a technique or product (maybe a premixed render product) that would allow me to achieve a nice smooth finish with only a very thin coat. I cant use plaster as I am afraid it will crack from the heat. I could use cement board and then extend the inside edge of the mantelpiece to cover the edges but I would prefer to succeed with my rendering attempt.
