Hi guys, I need some advise on how to repair my walls so I can paint them. Complete novice so all help appreciated!

I’ve stripped the wallpaper in the bedroom and there is a spiderweb of cracks underneath. Some are hairline, most are 1mm and there’s a few that are 2mm wide.

There’s a 2mm layer of plaster on top of what I think is layered plaster, which sits on top of the breeze blocks. So I believe the thin layer is an old skim coat. Some of this has blown and come off to leave exposed areas up to 6 inches across.

House was built in 60s.

My question is should I reskim or can I fill with a fine filler like Tourpet and sand down before painting?

From what I’ve learned online even if you plan to reskim you need to fill the cracks first. So if you’ve filled and sanded why then skim? What advantage does skimming have over filling and sanding?

I am probably going to have the same situation in all the rooms so would prefer to take the cheaper DIY route. But I also don’t want to do that if eventually all the cracks are going to come back, and that can be prevented by skimming.

Any advice greatly appreciated!
