Regardless of what you put over the boards and fixings, make sure there is no movement in them relative to each other.
Pops occur when the fixing is rigid and the board moves. The plaster on the board goes with the board, the fixing then breaks thru the plaster . (More accurate to say, the fixing holds the plaster on it in place, while the rest on the board moves.)
If you have no movement , then you won't need scrim/fibatape , although for the time it takes to put this on, why not do it.
