Slate coping on an exterior wall

Hi,

Can anyone offer any advice on attaching a slate coping tile to the top of an exterior wall?
I've tried a mix of 3:1 sand and cement and it stuck for a while but then just as easily came off a few days later.
Is it worth knocking off the now set mortar and reseating it or is an adhesive a good way to go?

was your mortar to dry/stiff ?
did you wet your slate ?
best to start again, wet down wall top, if mortar dries to quick
it loses all it strength.
