I am using a Varilight dimmer switch to dim the lights in my living room.

As I dim the lights, the fitting itself starts to buzz. This is the fitting in use:

I don't think that it said anything about not being compatible with dimmers in the instructions, and I am using a very similar fitting in another room which does not buzz at all.

Does this sound like a faulty fitting?

This is what I'd do . . . . Take the fitting down, and peer inside the enclosure at the top. If there is a large round mass filling that space, you have a wound transformer, which is unsuitable for dimming (or at least wont take too kindly to it!). I strongly suspect this is the case.
