Our "slightly" sloping back garden in which I'm going to add a 1.2m high retaining wall (pretty much where the slope begins), add a patio beneath it (raised 400mm from current level), and level the lawn above. Quite a large first project, and I fear a considerable number of skips to dispose of the soil

Just a thought re the soil.
I did something similar a while ago and advertised the soil on freecycle, got several people who wanted it to top up flower beds, raised planters, etc...
Got them to collect directly from the garden so they even did some of the digging for me!
As long as the soil as reasonably good, it's worth a shot before shelling out on skips.

Great idea - thanks DunstableDIYer.
I'd love to be able to use some of it to build up the bottom level (on top of the existing slabs) by 150-200mm, covered by 200mm of MOT type 1 sub base, so the new patio ends up 400mm higher. I've read that soil shouldn't be used this way, but is it possible if it is compacted with a wacker every couple of inches, and retained within a short cement block perimiter wall?
Any advice gratefully received!
