Small rectangular hole in 1930s concrete subfloor

Just curious, what is this hole for? Was it part of the construction?
I stuck a breadknife down it (using to cut insulation boards, not because I was making sandwiches in there) and just hit dirt, I think.

I agree with footprints, we had the same in the concrete foundation for our garden wall, and i was puzzling over it for ages until i realised it was a long departed wooden stake!
 
I did think about measuring it, as I knew somebody would ask. But I didnt. Covered up now.
