HI all,

Can anyone shed some light on this, BGas were scheduled to change our meters over to the new smart ones, they arrived to do the job but left 15 minutes or so later.

The reason, aparently this from the services box to the meter there are two red lines and one black line and from the side of the meter to the CU 1 Brown (live) and 1 Blue (neutral).

I assume it is something to do with the service box to meter diagram below:-

Any Ideas welcome.

TIA
Andy

Is it possible that you can post a picture of the meter and the cutout so we can get a better idear as that drawing is a bit confusing.

ps I fit "smart meters" for BGas but i did not do this.

Unicorn - how long have you lived there?

Ever thought your electricity bills were surprisingly low?

I've seen this many times before. Probably a variant of this:

Where the connection to the output of the meter is made with a henly or some other kind of connector in the service head or in one of those plastic blocks that are sometimes fitted between the head and the meter.

The neutral is taken direct from the head since there is just a solid link in the meter between the two neutral terminals.

The meter guy must have been a numpty...

I'm a bit confused here - how does that explain the two apparent L feeds from head to meter which the OP described?

Kind Regards, John.

Normally live and neutral go as a pair from service head to meter and then metered live and neutral go as a pair from the meter to the CU.

In this picture the installer has taken live and neutral to the meter and then taken the metered live back to a connector in the service head. From the service head there is a pair neutral and metered live to the consumer unit.

The meter only needs one neutral as the neutral in and neutral out are joined together in the meter and only there in order that the meter can know what voltage is present.

Yes, but that's not what the OP described, is it - he described (and showed in his picture) only two (not three) reds going to the service head - or am I missing something?

Kind Regards, John.

Hi Aptsys,

Yep looks like your image, brain fail on my diagram for the feed to cu, on my part sorry bout that, image below: (colored dot to indicate cable colour, as its no too clear)

House built in the 1949/50's Hull council, current meter is 3rd and wiring follows change of meters 1=15amp round pin, 2nd 13amp and Blk/Red, current meter 13 amp and Br/Bl wiring.

I suspect the drawing is slightly incorrect.
Possibly, but what about his prose:

?

Kind Regards, John.

Brain fail on my part for the diagram, well was after midnight, soz for bad initial info evrybody.
