soak away problem stinks

got a problem im hoping you can help with plz

when the people doing my garden ripped up the concrete path they found an old soakaway ( still used )

i quickly backfilled the hole(as no pipes where evident ) and now water from the soak way is now seeping to the surface and smelling

any ideas as to what i need to do, thanks

A soakaway should not smell foul as generally it takes away rainwater.
You will have to dig out again and put in some hardcore to allow the water to percolate downwards.
In the meantme spike it with a long pole to allow it to drain more.
