Soakaway breather pipe

I am about to lay a new lawn , but the breather pipe for my soak away is right in the middle of the area. It is a soakaway from a pre world war septic tank.
1. Do I even need a breather pipe at all.
2. Is there any restrictions on what size the pipe need be.

If the septic tank is as old as that, I reckon you'd get away without a breather at all.....is the tank still in commission?

Yes, it was built on an old military barracks for about 100 men, now only used by a family of 4
