soft/dry walls

Hi

I have a house built in 1912 which has soft plaster walls.
Today's job was to fit a curtain pole, in a newly decorated room. It seems like I have drilled in between brick and the rawlplug can't grip. Any advice on how I can get a good anchor point in the wall?

Are drywall fixings any good for this?

Can you not move the pole up or down a bit? your only going to need 2" failing that stick some no nails in the hole put you plug in and wait for it to harden.
