Since I need a combination hot/cold/header indirect cylinder for a Rayburn Heatranger, and there is absolutely no room upstairs, would it be possible to site the tank on the ground floor?Would the hot water get up to the first floor taps on gravity feed alone?I was looking originally at the utility room roof space but it transpires there is no room there either!

How would the water flow up to the first floor, by gravity, from a tank on the ground floor? At least, that seems to be the implication of the question you are asking, is that what you meant?

You will have to install the tank higher than the Rayburn, so that gravity circulation can take heat away from it.

You're quite right in your assumption - how to get hot water flowing from downstairs. How much higher than the Rayburn would the tank have to be,assuming hot water would have to travel about 8' vertically?

8'6", but 10' would be a realistic minimum, and even then it would take a long time to fill a bath. you could try things out by using a tank and some 22mm plastic pipe going downstairs and back up again to see how it looks filling a bath. The problem will ALWAYS be that you have to have gravity heat leak.
