Hi,

In my house build project, I am trying to see if I am doing enough to minimise noise from the rooms upstairs.

We have a floor made of 18mm ply over 225mm joists and then probably 12mm ply + 12mm ceiling board, or maybe a 15mm ceiling board. I am thinking of stuffing rockwool insulation in the ceiling before fitting the ceiling boards.

The floor upstairs will likely be engineered wood plus some underlay. I am thinking of using standard wood fibre underlay (5mm) and perhaps a thin 3mm foam layer.

Is the rockwool going to make any difference at all to the sound getting through? Does it benefit if it gets packed very tightly? Is the fibre underlay OK to mute sounds and provide a good base at a sensible price, or should I be looking at something else?
