Ive moves into a three bedroom property the previous owners knocked the master bedroom and box room into one.

Then reconverted back putting a new wall in.

Although the box room light switch is a pull cord hidden in a cupboard that's been built above the stairs inside the room, and for it to work you need the master bedroom light on too.

What have they done?

I want to move the pullcord back into the room and make it independent.
How big a task is this? I've zero electric experience if it's best to hire a sparky any ideas on the task for them? Thinking in terms of cost and time.

Thanks in advance

It is likely the that the lighting circuit has been incorrectly wired up.
With the permanently live to the master bedroom having to be in the closed position to allow the box room light to function.
If you can post some pictures of the inside of the master bed room switch, showing cables and cable connections to the switch plate and the inside of the pull cord switch. It may help us find a resolution to your problem, also pictures of the internal of the light fitting could be advantageous.
If this is not possible an explanation of the set up regarding cables, switches and terminal points would help. Isolate circuit and prove it is dead prior to opening enclosures up.
As far as you altering the circuit/moving pull cord.
It would be useful for you to have take a look at the information provided on Wiki //www.diynot.com/wiki/electrics
Also the need of at least a multimeter for simple dead testing and voltage testing, would be best purchased.
