Belt slipping will cause the drum to slow down.
Is there a lot of vibration as well ? e.g. the drum bearing being worn may cause the inner drum (the moving bit) to touch the outer drum (the stationary outer bit)
When spinning,the pump is normally going as well - does the noise occur at any other time ?
