on a recent trip to France i noticed on many chimneys pots a spinning silver fluted sphere. Sorry for the description but its the best i can do. What are they called exactly. And what do they do? Would one of these fixtures improve the performance of my wood burning stove or are they just to stop birds coming down the flue, something we have quite regulaly. They also look quite nice. Thankyou

They help to extract the smoke from the chimney by creating lower pressure within the stack whilst also having the benefit of stopping the birds getting in.

I don't know what you have done but make sure regulary clean the chimney flue or stove flue because any residue can interfere with the draw of the chimney. The biggest problem is most property are air tight and fire needs oxygen, open a window slightly to allow fresh air to stove, ideally a floor vent below the stove air inlet. In cold weather build the fire slowly to warm up the chimney/flue because the chimney/flue is cold therefore the air is heavier and the draw of the chimney/flue will start as soon it's warm
