Hi,
I need to double.up rafters around velux Windows. Is it possible to splice the new rafters so as to avoid removing the roof covering to fit them behind the purlins.
The splice would have to be mid span, not at a structural member.
Thanks in advance

Would the upper purlin with collars above be classed as a structural member, thus have the spliced connection there?

If you are positioning your skylight between the ridge and your purlin then you only need to fix it to the ridge and a few inches over the purlin, if its tight and you can't turn the rafter over then you can notch the rafter over the purlin to give a little more room to twist it in.
