Hi guys,

a little help if you could?

My parents have an old prefab outbuilding at the back of there property. water/condensation has gotten into the olf fuse box and blew 2 fuse carriers apart deeming it unuseable. I changed the box for a new split load box with a 100A main switch and 2 RCDs. Now i have connected it all back up there is some funny goings on which i cannot explain. I have one rcd protecting 3 6a & 2 16a MCBs and the other rcd is protecting 4 32a & 1 40a MCB. The problem i have is when i have all the power on and i plug a kettle or small blow heater into any of the sockets no circuits trip but the rcd suppling the 6 & 16a mcbs trips. I have checked all the wiring and my neutrals are within the correct N bar for that rcd. The funny thing is when i plug a lamp into the sockets that is fine everything still works.

Do you really require 2 RCDs or could i take 1 out and just protect the sockets?

Very long post guys sorry but im at a brick wall

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did your continuity & EFLI tests indicate that there might be anything odd with the any of the circuits?

What were your IR measurements for each circuit, and RCD test results?

hi ban, the installation has not been tested. technically i am an electrician but only on paper. i completed my college course and my fica test through my engineering apprenticeship so i dont do a great deal of electrical work as it shows. Generally if i do any installation work i then pay a company to come out and Insp & test the work but as it was for my parents i have not done so. I guess this would be the way forward on this one. If for example you had an rcd protected ring main which was constantly tripping due to a heating element how would you normally go about this as it would wold not meet standard to disconnect the rcd?

Even on paper you should have known better.

Yup.

Replace the dodgy heating element.
