Morning all.

Having a new super insulated roof put over my sun-room where there has never been any ceiling lighting before.

Had booked a spark to come and wire up for 4 ceiling spots but he's suddenly decided to go on holiday. The building work is starting tomorrow and I don't think I can get another spark to come at such short notice.

Can I run the cabling for these and a switch so that the builder can complete the job and the spark can connect up later? The idea is that said spark will be faced with a tail for the main supply and switch, with cable sticking out of the newly plastered ceiling for the spots.

If so, what cable should I use and how should the wiring run to comply with current regs. Any advice on the best spots to use would also be appreciated.

Many thanks for any ideas and info.

You probably only really have 2 options.
1 get in another sparky
2 wait until he is back and start building then.

Really?

Surely all I'm doing is first-fix of the cabling - spark would do all the connecting and fitting work.

I guess it's a regs thing......

How do you know what cable to use and where to run it?[/quote]

Er....that was my question.

If I'm breaking regs by running the cable myself I'd rather not but I've done something similar before when I've run the cabling for a ring main for a new kitchen, leaving the spark to fit the power points and connect to the consumer unit - he was happy to sign it off as part P compliant.

You cannot put spot lights in a 'super insulated roof' unless you take steps to ensure that the manufacturers instructions are followed and therefore this will probably mean your 'super insulated roof' will no longer be 'super insulated'.
There is also the issue of potentially breaching building regulations.

If you don't know what size cable to use then you need to speak to your 'holidaying' spark. Given your 'super insulated roof' there may be a requirement to consider the impact of the insulation on the cable and any ancillary equipment that forms part of the lighting unit.
