Hi,
Can I take three spurs from a 30 amp junction box connected to the ring main, each connected to its own fused switch, one going to an exterior 150w pir spot light, one going to an air pump for a pond and one going to an RCD double exterior socket powering a 72w uv lamp and a pond pump?

Thanks for any help.
Robbie.

Robbie,

In the situation you are thinking of, you would be better forgetting the junction boxes, and wiring the FCU fused connection units (with switches if you want) directly into the ring.

Is the ring circuit you plan to connect these to protected at the main consumer unit with an RCD? If it is then the spurs are also protected so you would not need additional rcd protection on the exterior socket.

There are many other important things to consider here though - type and size of cable to the exterior loads, protection during their run, etc., so please ask about those if you are not sure.

If the main ring is not rcd protected, then you could use rcd spurs, though you would be better fitting rcd protection at the consumer unit to protect the entire ring final circuit.

You mentioned an RCD for the pond stuff btw, but not for the air pump for the pond, which will need to be protected (the light will not require it).

As Breezer mentions, Part P would require you to notify this in advance to your local Building control, unless you are an approved competent person with one of the Part P schemes .

Hope that Helps

Gavin
