Stair carpet meets vinyl, which woudl you choose?

My stairs are already carpeted but I'll be getting new carpet at some point in the next year or two.
I'm about to lay ply over the floorboards in the hall, ready for vinyl, but which way would you arrange for the (eventual) stair carpet to meet the floor?

A - will give a better finish and B will show any flaws in the cut vinyl.

I'd be awkward and go ply, carpet then vinyl.
I do it both ways.
But I tell customers to get carpet done before I do the Karndean etc due to the fact of them damaging the Karndean when fitting the carpet.
