We decided that itd be a good idea to take the boarding off the stairs hoping to find spindles, but instead found a mess. Ive found that there's no spindles or even newel posts, there's random wooden posts nailed to the stringer, the posts are all different sizes and not spaced evenly. I don't want to just put the boarding back up and forget I ever saw it, I've got the parts to put in a balustrade, what I'm struggling with is how to fit the newel posts.
For the top newel I was going to notch the post so it sits 50% onto the joist and secure from the front of the post to the joist with a couple of screws and also from the base down into the top of joist, should that be stong enough.
At the bottom im really not sure what to do the stringer currently ends on bottom step which is then just resting on some blocks of wood, should the newel go to the floor or could it the cut so it sits on the bottom step and then secured to the wooden blocks?
