Hi, I'm sanding stairs down for repainting and replacing spindles.

The stairs are stepped along the side so a base rail can't fit diagonally along the bottom.

There are groves cut into the step which the spindles fit into. What normally goes on the outside edge of the stairs? I'll attach a pic shortly when i get a chance.

The stairs were in a bit of a state before and i cut some chamfered narrow wood origionally and nailed down the side which didn't look right and revisiting the stairs i want to do them properly.

Thanks in advance

Was there originally a wall up the side of the stairs that has been removed?
How to decorate the edge of the treads is a good question, You could trim the treads back a bit and then place a piece of timber on the end to make it flush with the string or replace the treads and let them run past the string a little and round the ends.
