The cold water tap on our bath is playing up, it will only open by about 1/2 a turn, then it stops turning, so only a trickle of water comes out. I took out the valve assembly and gave it a good old spray with WD40, when I replaced it no water came out at all! As a temporary measure I loosened the valve locking nut so the whole assembly turns, this at least lets the water flow out although with a bit of a leak round the bottom of the tap.

My question is: will the whole valve assembly need replacing or can it be dismantled and cleaned up?

And: I can't tell who made the tap. How do I then go about getting a replacement valve assembly if I need one, as I've been told that tap valve sizes vary from make to make.

You can replace the whole valve. And I have been told that B&Q are selling generic tap valves for.... 98p!! YES! 98p. Worth a go for 98p i would think.

That's cheap! I will give it a go, even though the sceptic in me says that 'generic' means it won't fit anything properly! Ah well, fingers crossed.
