Hi All,

I have read lots of posts (questions and answers) about boarding out lofts for storage, and in the mean time adding extra insulation. I have a loft that I would like to do this too, but...

My joists are 400mm apart, 100mm high. Running perpendicular to them are 4x2 vertical, spaced about 900mm!

On top of that what would you recommend to lay as boarding? MDF, Chipboard, Ply, Loft boards etc? Not sure what will be safest spanning the 900mm gaps, or should I lay more 4x2?

Afterwards was thinking about thermawrap on the rafters but have read that they are a bit of a waste as the heat has already escaped.

Thanks in advance to any answers.

Putting in an extra 4x2 between the exsisting would be the best bet, giving a insulation depth of 250mm, then overboarding with standard flooring grade chipboard or better still ply.
I've done between my rafters but only because I got the kingspan for nothing otherwise as people say it's a waste as the heat you will save won't ever pay for the insulation.

Thanks for reply.

That's great. Will buy extra timber and ply it. 18mm ? Happy with over kill, just incase I drop something!

Sad but I'm looking forward to getting extra insulation in there! Going greener by the day. Going to stick led lights up there too. So I can see what in in each box of stuff.

Just one more thing...

What is thebest way of fixing joist perp over joists?

I was thinking drill, glue, screw. :D

Don't botter with the glue there's no need. If you find screwing at a angle a problem then you can always use metal plates, just look at jiffys at a merchant.

Awesome cheers.

Previous owner had 12mm chipboard spanning 900mm gaps. Where the boards met wasn't at joist so they screwed another panel on top! Screwed it every 5cms.

Bonkers
