My big Gate Valves (in the loft) are seized up. Is it O.K. to use the trick of heating them up with a blow torch, as I have often used this method to free up siezed nuts and bolts or is there a rubber washer inside that will melt?

Frankly I wouldn't bother - they won't stay free forever even if you get them to move.
It's far less effort to remove and replace. or, if they're fully open, don't even remove them.
And don't fit any cheap rubbish - get a Pegler gate valve. Even at thrice the price of a crap one they're a bargain.
