Hi All,

Just in the process of converting my garage into a studio and I’m just trying to get some help on vapour barriers. This is how the garage looks at the moment:

Walls = Brick wall – 2inch air gap – 4X2 Stud wall filled with 100mm rockwool.

Ceiling = Joists filled with 100m rockwool.

I have a few questions:

• Where does the vapour barrier go? I’ve researched this forum and the consensus would appear to be after the insulation so it will be:
Walls = Brick wall – 2inch air gap – 4X2 Stud wall filled with 100mm rockwool – Vapour barrier - Plasterboard
Ceiling = Joists filled with 100m rockwool - Vapour barrier – Plasterboard
• Does the vapour barrier completely cover the stud wall and insulation or should there be gaps?
• Can you recommend a vapour barrier please? Is this one any good?

Many thanks in advance

You've got it sussed.
There should be no gaps. If you make any holes or tears, patch them up with pvc or silver tape. Fix the membrane on with an electric stapler or hammer tacker.

Quicker to use foil backed plasterboard of course, but costs an extra couple of quid per sheet. Most folk would spend the extra for an easier life.
