Suddenly I've got no water upstairs, but no evidence of leaks anywhere

What I'm worried about now is what this valve was for, would it have been protecting the washing machine or the rest of the plumbing?
It’s a check valve (sometimes incorrectly called a non-return valve). Iirc they’re only required on certain machines, most now have an air gap to fill the water. Just research your machine if it needs one.

Thanks, wasn’t a very good check valve then, was happily letting water through the wrong way for 36 hours before deciding to stop it.
