Suggestions for a beginner if poss'

Hi everyone

I am just finishing off therm' boarding and have left a gap at the bottom (to allow airflow, under floorboards as was recommended) and this will be covered up with skirting board once floors have been laid.

I do have another gap at the top (approx 25mm) and just wanted some advice on how to finish to the (lathe & plaster) ceiling which seems to be in ok condition.



Should I add 25mm battens to the ceiling and plasterboard onto them, creating a void and effectively leaving the gap in this void?

Cut 25mm strips of therm' board and fill that way (not the easiest!) If so what would you suggest I use to ensure a straight accurate cut?

Fill the gap and get plasterer to simply skim the existing ceiling, if so what is best product to fill, I think I read somewhere that expanding foam could be used?

Any other suggestions as to what is best practice in these instances?

I'm not sure as to best approach, but the pros will give some good advice.

This looks like a tape and join job, would that be right? If so, the correct thing to do is to take the board to the ceiling. Coving may be your easiest solution.

can't tell from the pics the best solution here but john is right, the board needs to meet the ceiling so however you do it more strips of board need to go in there.

Why was this recomended & by whom? Your other thread would seem to indicate 27mm Thermaline boards, what fixing method did you use for the boards? Have you used Thermaline Basic or the higher spec Plus with an integral vapiour barrier? What type of floorboards are you having?

You’ve created yourself a load of extra work there & the possibility you will get continuous cracks developing; personally I would have butted the boards to the ceiling & packed out on the bottom behind the skirting

What’s the ceiling like? If it’s going to need reboarding, I’d be inclined to batten down to avoid any future problems with cracking around the strip. The best way to fill it otherwise would be to stick strips of boarding of the same type & tape the lot; use a cheap saw. Problem with using expanding foam or huge gobs of plaster/filler is that it will expand & contract at a different rate to the board & likely to open up as cracks along the join line.

I can see this goes on from your previous thread & the pic does make it a little better to see but are those sash windows? I still don’t really understand why you appear to have only a single block wall (from your last thread), you didn’t really explain or if this was in fact a cavity wall; if it’s really is a single block external wall, you could have problems. I think it would help if you explained in greater detail what you have there as there is a danger that "drip feeding" questions in this way will lead to your getting not necessarily wrong but misleading advice overall.

The boards have already been fixed to the walls (taped & joined) . I hadn't thought of using coving this may be an option?

If I was to cut strips to fit the gap any suggestions on tools to use to ensure I get a nice straight cut? This is 27mm foam backed board btw...
