Suggestions for size of niche lights to go into a bathroom alcove

I have a few bathrooms that have been made ready with alcoves. Could I please have some suggested circular niche light sizes and cut out hole size and suggestions for light colour.

Also what is the difference between downlights for the above, which need transformers or are mains linked and dont need transformers. If you dont need the headache of transformers blowing etc, why dont people just go mains led?

The choice will first of all be determined by which zone in the bathrooms the alcoves are located. In some places in a bathroom you just cannot have a mains-powered anything. In some of these you have to use extra low voltage so an SELV power supply may be needed.

If you dont need the headache of transformers blowing etc, why dont people just go mains led?

When most transformers were fitted there was limited choice for small fittings, 12 volt lamps were more reliable as opposed to the Tungsten Gu10 which regularly failed, there was hardly any Led about and Cfl lamps were too slow starting and even the newer halogen Gu10 failed regularly
