I'm going away for 4 weeks in the summer - longest I've been away since becoming a homeowner.

Is it common practice to turn the water off whilst I'm away? (Via stopcock)

I just left it when I was away for 2 weeks last summer (didn't even cross my mind, to be honest).

I'll have someone checking with access midway through the trip.

If nobody uses the hot water or flushes the toilets and they don't shut off 100% then water can run out the overflow pipes.
If I check on someone's house I flush toilets and run hot water to drain down header tank just incase.
No need to run hot water with combi boiler because there is no header tank.

I don't have a header tank and all my toilets shut off fully, so I don't turn off water when we go away but it can be a good idea.

Up to you

I'd shut it off, for the few seconds it takes. Unless someone is coming in daily and/or needs water to pets or plants, then turn it off. Your Insurance Company will like you.

I painted the outside of a house when customers were on holiday.
By the 4th day, every overflow was shooting out water.
Became a real problem!

I turn off everything except the freezer, fridge and cable box.
We have a neighbour watering garden so water stays on.

Turn it off, no harm done.
