Hi

Can anyone recommend any good suppliers of cages/baskets.

Decided to use these as our 1.8m x 4.8m retaining wall.

Hard to order without seeing them as I don't want sag and bulges so I'd probably avoid eBay but don't want to pay a fortune.

Thanks

An online calculator suggests that a gabion wall 2m high needs to be 1.5m thick at the base, so it's using up almost half of the flat ground area you've excavated.....

It may be a relatively cheap solution, but you might still prefer something else.

BTW this isn't a subject I know much about, except that I do know that retaining walls are often much more substantial than we intuitively guess that they should be - i.e. we non-experts tend to underestimate the force that an earthbank will exert.

Good quality gabion baskets are not low cost. I looked at using gabions to defend the lawn from erosion of the bank of the stream that ran along the garden of my last house. It did work out cheaper to build a retaining wall with block work tha to use gabions.

To avoid sags and bulges the stones cannot be just tumbled in the cages. They need to be laid to create a stable mass of stones and not a higgly piggly heap that will settle over time.

Thanks for replies. The chalk isn't even going to move, we're just being cautious.

It's all pretty solid. I'd still prefer sleepers but it'll work out too expensive.
