There was an opposition day debate in the house of commons this week focused on policy and financial support for British farmers.

The motion calls on the Government to take three immediate corrective steps:

Guarantee SFI Funding: Provide long-term funding guarantees to all eligible applicants who were locked out of the 22 September portal.

Scrap the Family Farm Tax: Fully reverse the damaging changes to Agricultural Property Relief (APR) to safeguard succession and capital investment on family farms.

Commit an additional £1 Billion Annually to ELMs: Provide an additional £1 billion per year to properly fund Environmental Land Management schemes, matching domestic demand and the true costs of environmental stewardship.

53 Libdems, 2 independents, 1 DUP and Jeremy Corbyn vote for.

279 Labour MPs voted against

The Conservatives, Reform and the Greens were all absent.

Cannot say I understand the full implementations of the motions.
Disgusting that MPs should stay away for the vote
I believe that farmers should get more support from the government and the general public should appreciate the work they do.
All to often now Field's are being sold off for industrial or housing.
We need this land for food.
Never seen a housing estate or industrial units being sold off for farming

The Liberal Democrats did put forward the three proposals, and Labour voted against the motion. However, Reform UK weren’t all absent. Eight Reform MPs, including Nigel Farage, Richard Tice and Lee Anderson, voted in favour. SNP and Plaid Cymru MPs also supported it.

It’s also worth remembering that voting against an opposition motion isn’t necessarily the same as voting against all support for farmers.

There are legitimate questions about the Government’s handling of farming payments and inheritance tax, but surely we should get the voting facts right before drawing conclusions.

I can. This proposal goes someway to trying to make the UK more self sufficient in good production. Recently for many farmers the only way to stay in business is to use the land for other purposes (Solar farms, Business units, 'Play' facilities) which are more profitable than top of production.

Mass immigration is destroying the country by making land and buildings too expensive for anything other than housing. It is popular with builders though, which is perhaps why there is such a lot of support for it on this forum. Up the revolution, millions and millions must go.

What happened to all that money that was promised to farmers to replace the EU funds when that was lost?

Exactly - why aren't labour dishing it out to farmers.
By the way it was never "EU funds" it was our tax money sent to the EU who then decided which of our farmers to give a tiny bit back to pay them not to grow anything. That is of course after the EU quangos have paid themselves for doing it ------- Barmy, flipin barmy.

The UK govt has given ridiculous amounts to farmers to grow nothing since we left the EU, we created a worse form of the EU's subsidy system.

Harry's Farm on YouTube has given lots of info about the stupid amounts of money he's been getting, to the point where last year he grew mostly weeds. You can't blame him, I'd do just the same if they were waving money at me.

What irritates me is, Farage dressed up in all his Harris Tweed gear and came out to support the farmers when they were protesting against Labour's farm tax, but he couldn't be bothered to turn up to parliament to vote for this motion. The bloke is a to55er, and so are all the other MPs who were absent.

VOTE LABOUR FOREVER then!
