A member of the Democratic Socialists of America unexpectedly won the primary election to become Florida Democrats’ pick for the US Senate, in the latest victory for progressives shaking up the party’s establishment.
Angie Nixon, a Florida state representative, clinched the Democratic nomination early on Wednesday. She beat Alex Vindman, a US Army veteran whom Donald Trump fired from the National Security Council after he testified against the president during congressional impeachment proceedings in 2019.
Nixon’s 12-point win is the latest boost to the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, which has secured primary victories in Minnesota, New York and Colorado as it campaigns on voters’ discontent over the political establishment.
“Together, we went up . . . against millions of dollars . . . We were outspent 16 to one and we won,” Nixon said in her victory speech, as she called for taking on “the rampant corruption in Washington DC”.
