Hi.
What's the best and neatest way to finish off a SWA cable going through a wall? I don't like the idea of just bending the cable and pushing it through. I thought of putting it through a galv round conduit terminal box but the only problem I see is where to take the earth from the screen of the cable.
Thanks.

What do you mean by "finish it off"?

And by "where to take the earth from the screen of the cable"?

What are you actually trying to do? Where/to what is the SWA connected to at source, and where does it go after it goes through the wall?

I think i know what you mean. In my opinion, the best way would be as you say, gland it off into a terminal box, with a waterproof rear outlet (drilled or purpose made). Leave the inner sheath on until you reach the appliance.

As for the earth, fit a banjo washer where it screws into the box. Using brass fasteners, connect a short piece of suitably sized cable from this banjo washer to another brass screw fitted to a hole drilled in the side of the box. On the inside fit another cable from the screw to the appliance where it can be connected to the earth terminal along with the core used as earth, if you have used one (good practice to).

There is a 4mm threaded hole inside the galv box, that is for the earth wire to connect to, providing the cable is correctly glanded into the box.

IMO an earth nut would be better than a banjo...

But if you use a conduit box the entry hole is threaded to take a 20mm gland, so neither a banjo nor an earth nut would be needed...

Thanks for your help.
I'm going to use a conduit box with the 20mm gland screwed in as you said. I'll then use the pre-drilled threaded hole in the box to earth it to the installation.
I'm still going to use three core and earth the garage sockets in the usual way. And it will be fully tested afterwards.
Thanks again.

And it will be fully tested afterwards.
It needs to be tested before and after energising.

And as it sounds like you're running a supply outside to another building, and creating final circuits in there it all needs notifying to LABC in advance...
