Switch swap

My g/f has asked me to swop a couple of switchplates over in her flat.

The 1 gangs were not problem.


She currently has this 2 gang that controls the hall light (2-way) and the bathroom light (1-way). White plastic MK.
It is earthed to the metal back box.

It looks like this.

And the new swith looks like this...

What is the correct way that the wires should go?

if you prod at the old switch with your meter probes, you will find that it is made up of two "triangular" switches, one point up, one point down. Power goes in at the single terminal at one end, and comes out at one or the other of the terminals at the other end.

In your diagram it is not clear which way the triangles are laid out, but if you can test, you will find it, and then you should be able to see how to do the new one.

The new switch has both the triangles up the same way.

It looks to me like one of the switches is being used as a 2-way,and the other as 1-way. That's OK.

Mark all the wires and all the terminals before you take anything apart.

p.s. If you have not got a test meter, go and buy one. A neon screwdriver will not do.

Hi John,

Yes, 1 is a 1-way and other is a 2-way.

As you look at the switch from the front, the left hand side is the 2-way switch and the right is 1-way.

Unfortunately I do not have a multimeter.

Do you think we can read through the paint from here?

Isolate the circuit, get out the wire brush and get the bleeding paint off the switch.

Black on old L1: sleeve in brown and connect to new left L1.

Black on old upper Com: sleeve in brown and connect to new right L.

Black on old lower Com: sleeve in brown and connect to new left L.

Red on old L1: connect to new right L1.

Red on old L2: connect to new right L2.

L on new switch is same as Com on the new switch, read what John said about triangles, its just a straight swap

I would sleeve the blacks red as that is the existing phase colour.
