I stripped wallpaper from a wall today using hot water and a sponge. I'm going to emulsion the wall. After stripping the paper, I tried to clean it with hot water and sponge, but there is a sticky/tacky residue from the old paste that I couldn't shift.

Can any experts tell me what is the best thing to use to shift this residue, as I'm guessing the new emulsion isn't going to stick very well otherwise? FYI - before the wall was papered it was matt emulsioned - so it's an emulsioned surface under the paste residue - not bare plaster.

Thanks for any help or advice.

120 grade sandpaper disc on a cheap orbital sander bodged on a vacuum cleaner. That will take paste off.

Then a coat of gardz.

Some just use gardz to neutralise paste..

Sugar soap and a sponge in hot water. You may need to change the water frequently, but it should do the trick.
