Nutwork Fail replaced a blah blah blah
So should the Rail Network have spent more on the bridge to rebuild something more attractive to meet the whims of the few? Or been more cost effective and kept prices to a minimum on behalf of the masses who actually use the service and pay for it? Next you’ll be complaining that rail fares have gone up again.

Or should they have spent less and lowered the track to obtain the extra few inches and retained the perfectly good bridge ?. ( and saved money on the other 5 bridges they butchered )

Actually no because EU regulations about new bridges over electrified tracks means most bridges will have to be changed, even those where there is enough clearance for the overhead cables to be installed.

At least the local council and residents can influence if not control the design of new and replacement road bridges over rivers.

Watching the video of the bridge collapse one thing that struck me was the number of pipes , cables or services of some kind that had been laid in what was presumably a bridge built before those pipes. Perhaps by opting for the cheaper option of digging into the existing bridge rather than building another the bridge itself has been weakened just enough for the floodwater to do its work?
