Take that, Trump

That's what they've been negotiating about for months.

US government wanted to change the contract from bespoke 'acceptable use' wording to a new standard 'lawful use' wording.

Anthropic said that was mainly OK. But they still wanted these two exceptions carrying over from the original contract into the amended contract. In the end, the two sides couldn't reach agreement. I don't know why Trump wants mass AI surveillance of US citizens.

You have to be quite gullible to think this story is how it actually went.

Firstly, nobody gets to dictate these kind of terms when bidding on government contracts. They would have bent over backwards for their contract and the terms of their “$200M” deal would not have been restricted. Secondly, they won’t have anything unique.

So that’s. “Tech startup breaches government contract”.
Yes they can. BAE used to do the same sort of analysis for all their contracts.

which is irrelevant.
No, it's a business decision to not bid on contracts or to restrict the use of their products by their customers.

Anthropic have never licensed their products for use in fully autonomous weapon systems and are refusing to allow them to be licensed for that purpose, or for mass domestic surveillance.

Apparently they are so critical to those functions that they must allow their models to be used for that, and if not they can't be used for any purposes whatsoever by the government or any purposes by any government suppliers.

The last 2 press releases, show a desperate CEO, I don't have much sympathy. Don't play the "we want to be a force for good" then target US defence contracts.

indeed - not ideal if your business is built on defence contracts

I understand that is what they are saying in the PR, but its a fact that is disputed.

But Anthropic has ethics; its cheifs have decided they want to put limits on what they'll permit their AI to be used for. E.G. Not spying on the populus, I think I heard.

Their revenue is a bit more though, than that. It's $14 billion. 70x as much.
So yeah, you can!
And they have told Trumps government to go feck themselves. Good for them.

You have got it all back to front.

It is the US government which is trying to change the contract.
Yep, that's how it reads in the news. No doubt trump will have a massive tantrum about it once his other tantrums have waned.

what? Are you sharing your wisdom again.
My name is not jusin passing, no.

You can't push Trump around

However, with a tiny bit of research, US defense contracts accounts for a small percentage of their revenue, so this is not true of Anthropic AI....
